almondspice

almondspice
n 1. A sweet substance made from (ground) almonds, sugar and eggs, generally used as filling for cookies and bread. 2. An argument or idea that is repeatedly brought up during an argument or heated discussion with the goal of slowing the process of reaching a compromise.
v 1. To bring up arguments that add nothing of substance to a discussion with the goal of slowing process of reaching a compromise. ex – The president was almondspicing the discussion by reminding his opponent of the amount of marbles sent to Iraq.
Origin: literal translation from Dutch ‘amandelspijs’ (correct translation would have been ‘almondbutter’)

Weight vs. Volume

How many cups of
sugar are in hundred grams
Ask Isaac Newton

Update: Huh?. One day, everybody will go over to the metric system. One can only dream.
– It’s a go: almond stuffing is ready. Now it’s up to the dough part. More butter!
– I’ve got one ‘tour’ to go and then just roll the dough out as thin as I can. Now it’s 17:29. By 7 I should be able to tell if it worked out or not.
– Much later: It worked out OK. Not perfect: the dough needs more folding and (definitely) needs to be a lot thinner. The almond paste was perfect: reminder to self not to use too much of it on the dough itself. Otherwise the end results looks more like almond-spice explosion tarts.

A bus in the ditch

Wait: Earlier today an Acadian Lines bus skidded off the 102 and ended up in the ditch. Treacherous conditions this morning for sure: while the morning brought a pleasant surprise (less snow than expected), the snow kept on falling all day. Almost all day, then. I hear there’s a bigger storm steaming up from the east, scheduled to arrive around Saturday. If you plan to write me an e-mail tomorrow or the day after, please do not put ‘Yo’ or ‘Re: Yo’ in your subject line.

Say, I’m not particularly known being fond of watching TV. I only watch CNN, a habit relatives seem to have been taken over. To my surprise (after a bunch of coding), I dare to admit I enjoyed watching the series finale of ‘The Amazing Race: Family Edition’. There’s a new set of series to start next February. Hey, what happened to the BloggerTwins (earlier on xsamplex)?

The CBC has started a roundtable and invited Canada’s most talented bloggers, to discuss the elections and the race to the White House Downing Street Sussex Drive. If Canadian politics is your fancy, that be the place to watch. It’s (a lot) less cheesier than reading CTV’s elections blogs: CTV’s effort (while commendable) is hardly readable.

Viewers of a Dutch (political) television show selected Ms. Verdonk (Dutch only) as the politician of the year 2005. (Earlier)

Update: Maybe the main difference between the Roundtable and CTV’s blog is that the first one has opiniated bloggers contributing while the other one focusses on reporting. Maybe that’s why the other one is less cheesier: for news, I don’t depend on CTV alone (But I personally think Rosemary Thompson should write a lot more)

Winters

Give it up already! Snowstorm #2 is hitting us tonight and tomorrow morning, with once again, 20cms and higher. Watch! Me! Shovel! Snow! Blech. I’d be a millionaire for every inch of snow I moved.

Incidentally, I noticed a couple of disturbing patterns re: snowstorms:

  • Snowstorms only happen at night! That’s because you can’t really see snowflakes during the day. They’re really vain you know.
  • Big movies always premiere on snowstorm days. That’s because when it’s storming nobody really wants to be stuck at home. And movie companies know this.
  • There’s a linear relationship between the amount of snow and the physical location of a body we (here) name A. When A moves northward, there’s less snow to be detected. When A stays around the same area (SnowΔν↔∞), snow appears to stick around too.
  • When my brother sends highly descriptive messages with subjects like ‘Yo’ or ‘Re: Yo’, it is more likely that we get huge amounts of snow.

I’m still working on the right formula for the best approach to shovel and move huge amounts of snow. I keep you posted.

S’ Observations

Yesterday’s snowfest and cleaning didn’t hold us from doing some Christmas shopping. Some observations that might (or might not) entertain:

1. It wasn’t busy in the Mall. I’ve seen it busier. Initially, I assumed that the snow must have been keeping people away from doing their Christmas shopping. But then, maybe it’s because of Walmart?

2. I’m the only person in the world who knows what he gets. I played it for a couple of hours and then asked my wife to wrap it up. I can’t wait to unwrap it once again. Thanks to Alfons, for reminding me.

3. We only managed to find brown wrapping paper at Pharmasave’s. Earlier attempts to find it at Shopper’s Drugmart ended up empty-handed. My efforts there to locate a single roll did result in the best comical situation, handled nicely by the shop assistant:

* “Do you have brown wrapping paper?”
– “It should be with the Christmas wrapping paper. [after long search] Oh… it must have sold out”.
* “I guess brown is the most popular colour for wrapping up Christmas presents, this year”

4. The camera has an ‘auto-focus’ problem. And related (technically): But, why yes, we do have a blender. After all, I had to use it one time during my first attempt to make home-made sambal. (that sambal nearly killed me too, but that’s a different story)

5. One of the trees lost a big branch during the snow storm. It’s that heavy that I can’t tug it myself. Earlier, I’ve feared for losing this tree: for two consequent summers, this maple tree has literally been ravaged by caterpillars. I’d be suprised if it’ll blossom next year.

6. GIANT ICICLES-TIME! It’d be smart to stay clear from any building. You don’t want an icicle fall on your head. Water-puddles-day!

It be snowing

It be snowing. Make that a snowstorm. Our first heavy snow warning! We go for 25! There goes nothing above a White Christmas.

The results of the FIFA World Cup Draw. The Netherlands meet Argentinia, Ivory Coast and Serbia and Montenegro.

I’m impressed with Google’s Webclips. This guy is just an ‘ouwe zeur’.

I don’t get de.li.cio.us. I was never into it either. Now part of the Yahoo! family.

Talking about the snow: just walking out to find out it was nice and mild. Snowing for sure, but lets hope the temps will at least melt some of the snow in the morning. Don’t count on it though.

Update: 1. This must be our snowstorm
2. ‘What’s so cool about del.icio.us’.
3. 12/10/05 around 8:00 am.: 20-25 cms of heavy snow. Driveway done in an hour the manual way.

More of this cold please

We’ve slowly entered the cold dark age of Winter. Last week, the first couple of centimeters of snow seemed to announce the beginning of that age. I bet, those snowy leftovers will be hanging around until our first thaw in the Spring. -1o Degrees! So much for hoping for a milder Winter. Less snow then, please.

Earlier this week, my wife remembered the typical Dutch December 5th celebration and surprised me with a genuine (but not Dutch) chocolate letter. A genuine ‘A’ too. It was a moment of joy and obviously, pause too. Related to this: I’ve been wanting to make ‘amandelstaaf’ for the longest time. It brings up good memories about the day we touched Dutch soil.

I’ve been sporadically following the Curry vs. Winer fight, particularly after Curry’s last poo-poo and confession about editing the history of podcasting. Low blow after low blow, followed. While I’m not a fan of Curry either, seeing Winer manipulate his own writings just makes me want to throw up. Seeing Winer carry pictures of his buddies on his weblog, reminds me of a typical word: [opgeilen]. Huh?

Hey you!

Via Alfons, I found out that one of my nephews is breakdancing. Better yet, according to sources, breakdancing is actually still pretty popular over in Europe.

I find this hilarious, because over 20 years ago, both yours truly and his bro were pretty good breakdancers (previously on xsamplex). Hey, we didn’t dance on ‘Hey You’ (audio fragment [600K+] ), but we did on ‘Uprock’. I was one of those fearless headspinners. In my top days, I could do a clockwise headspin, stop in the middle, and then go counter-clockwise without a helmet: a feat that appeared to be so shocking to other breakdancers and onlookers. As a kid, naturally, I didn’t care. We did dance on a schoolnight too (we were invited): the stage event was played as a ‘cool guys’ vs. ‘uh-nerd guys’, and I fondly remember how after a couple of Alfons’ backspins and my headspins, the crowd started to pull out their hands for us. I can’t remember being nervous either, I just remember it was a long song we were dancing on.

The good part, is that we lost interest and returned to focus on our homework, school and more important matters, like reading books. Maybe we just tried to prove that there was after all a scientific point to breakdancing. It’s all about balancing, motion and gravity.

Anyways, if you really want to headspin, the first thing you need to learn is to balance on your head. The best way to do this, is with the help of a wall (so you won’t fall): I thought this was the hardest part of mastering the headspin. Having somebody trying to hold your legs is probably a good idea too: if you break your neck, at least someone can call the ambulance. Doing the spin is actually the easiest part: if you move your legs from spreaded to closed position and back (the ‘scissors move’), you’ll notice your body wants to move automatically. The trick is to gain speed by swinging your legs back and forward: while one leg tips, the other leg should move backward to maintain that precious balance. Oooh. Headspin!

Science matters.

Water, speed encore

Talking about water: it looks like we have our first snow of the season. A couple of centimeters and since it’s fairly cold (around the 4 degrees or something), I expect it to hang around for a while.

Via Kottke, this amazing video of a car racing through the streets of Paris. And A Google Map of the drive. More Rendezvous. And the best part, the science of Rendezvous.

Update (04/12/05): Big giant snowflakes. I guess Winter has started, already.

Warm water

Earlier this day, I was rinsing out the cans of red beans with cold water. Guess what: Warm water does a better job at that. It makes sense, because we generally know everything gets a better shine if you throw hot water at something. But why is that?

For that you have to look closely at what water actually is: it’s a bunch of molecules. When putting the heat on water, the exchange of energy makes these water molecules move faster and faster. Faster moving molecules (naturally) are better in ‘batting’ off stains (other molecules) than slower ones.

While I was trying to dissolve all of the bean residue, I was thinking of the ‘magic’ properies of soap. However, using soap with water, is not what I consider ‘fair play’. If water molecules were living things, they’d probably enjoy scooting around without the help of soap molecules.

Double-Double

From Merriam’s new iniative, Open Dictionary, a repository where users can add ‘new words’.

Double-Double
(noun) : A coffee, usually from Tim Hortons (Canadian coffee company), with two scoops of sugar and two shots (or containers) of cream.
“I’ll have a medium double-double to go please1.”

Now, that makes sense. (Note to MW maintainers: please allow backlinking to individual entries)

1If you look like you’re in a rush, strike the ‘to go please’. It’s only logical.
