Starship troopers

I

read Dvorak’s pessimistic editorial about the state of game development. While I agree with his basic conclusion that ‘it’s the same game over and over’, I’d like to add that the same is true for movies. Back in the days, there used to be a BASIC programming book that showcased the RND function by generating random Hollywood movie titles. There’s probably a dozen of those on the web.

The only criticism I have on game makers (and publishers) is that most of storylines of their games plain suck. There are some exceptions: think of the games that are published by LucasArts for example.

But going back to Dvorak’s text, where he compares the quality of games with the movie ‘Starship Troopers’:

“If you want to see exactly how inane this is, go out and rent the brain-dead Paul Verhoeven film, Starship Troopers. The movie stank so bad that nothing came of it after its release. It’s essentially a video game turned into a movie—all the elements are there, including an idiotic “boss” that is just some huge flabby bug—and it shows you just how lame these games actually are.”

Actually, ‘Starship Troopers’ is a brilliant satire on the military and society. Most shots intentionally were shot in ‘Triumph of the Will’-style showcasing the uselessness of war with dead-pan comedy. Not to mention the constant drill of ‘commercials’ and ‘news flashes’. Watching the war in Iraq unfold, a couple of years ago now, I frequently thought about this particular movie. It took that many years to learn to appreciate Verhoeven’s approach in ‘Starship Troopers’.

A world cup with 2 Dutch teams

Found via nu.nl (for some kind of reason I always end up there since other more responsible Dutch sources use the subscription model), uh, where was I? Yes, apparently during 1938 World Championship Football, there were two Dutch teams playing: one team representing the Netherlands, the other one the Dutch East-Indies. Not that Dutch East-Indies team actually qualified itself.

“The Dutch East Indies (today’s Indonesia, which has been independent since 1945) were the only Asian representative after Japan – locked in war with China – had pulled out. FIFA pitted the Dutch East Indies against the USA in a pre-finals play-off but this time the Americans, victorious against Mexico under similar circumstances in 1934, declined. Thus, the Dutch East Indies qualified without playing a single qualifying game.”

Score tables of that World Cup can be found here. There’s a page at Liga Indonesia telling the story about this 2nd team: However, I don’t read bahasa, but I wouldn’t doubt it, that the text is rather sarcastic about this attempt to cheat.

Also note that Dutch Guyana was also listed among the Central American countries to attend the World Cup, however the team was withdrawn.

The White House Today

Athe t the White House, a false alarm sent President Bush to the underground shelter. According to a spokesman:

“There was an indication that an aircraft has entered the no-fly zone. There’s an investigation to determine what it really was.”

The CNN article continues with:

Vice President Dick Cheney was not at the White House at the time but arrived minutes after the scare ended.

Did Cheney have to do with this scare?

upd. Naturally, this is all coincidence. That’s the point.

May 4th/May 5th

With Canada’s political parties in a hubris because of an upcoming showdown vote in the House of Commons, most (invited) MPs and prime minister have opted not to attend the 60th anniversary of the Liberation in the Netherlands (Dutch). (more here).

Earlier on local broadcaster ATV, Peter Stoffer, MP for Sackville (I think), did an emotional appeal (literally) to other MPs (and the prime minister) to set aside the political matters and attend the celebrations in The Netherlands. I’ll add an additional note, taken from the invitation I got from the H. Consul in Halifax: this may well be the last (massive) celebration of the Liberation in the Low Lands.

Backup

Back up after days of deliberations and things and things.

The hardest part was actually deciding to go forward or wait for data to come back from Alfons’ server. I’ll end up reimporting that data: most likely I have to merge old MySQL data with the current one.

There’s still some organizing to do, but for now, it’s done. And hey, thank god, I used to test my initial changes on my local server.

Naturally, got rid of that frigging default Dashboard (here).

Evil that strncpy does

Which Evil that men do one is more evil? strcpy or strncpy?

Google suggests ‘strcpy is evil’ when looking for ‘strncpy is evil’. Or as the author of this page says:

The usage of char * and strcpy causes horrible memory problems due to “overflow”, “fence past errors”, “step-on-others-toe” (hurting other variable’s memory locations) or “memory leaks”.

Horrors.

What’s on your Internet today?

I have been running the LinkSys router (and the WAP) since April 10th, so I might just spill my gall: the last time LinkSys issued a firmware update for the BEFSX41 was almost a year ago. Isn’t that a little bit too long ago?

So once in a while, the router acts like it’s in a stalemate: it’s not frozen, but the internal firewall just doesn’t let any packets through. The only way to correct this, is by turning off the firewall for a couple of seconds. My current network (as discussed before) isn’t really setup the right way either: the router is connected to a hub first, which then is connected to the cablemodem. It works, apparently and that’s the main thing that counts.

Also, I’ve managed to get an extra domain name (strncpy.org), as requested by Alfons. I have no idea why he liked that name, but it must have to do with this rant. Don’t ask me, but is it safe? As you noticed, this page can now safely referred to (and linked to) as ‘hoogervorst.ca’. Oh, the fun.

A Pope!

We have a pope. Naturally, this is something that needs to be celebrated and discussed. Metafilter, for example, has a lively discussion that ranges from outrageous funny to, yes, insightful. Rogers Cadenhead has the domain scoop. Literally.

Here’s a something I wondered about: when the white smoke was seen, and the bells rung, how long did it take to fill up St. Peter’s? Where did all these people come from? Did they just quit their work and ran over to the Vatican? Is there a law that says that everybody has a break when there’s a new pope elected?

AttenSHUN

It came to my attention that this year it’s the Queen’s 25th coronation anniversary. Which led me to look around for quotes and events that happend around that 1980 coronation. I can only remember the infamous pictures of a smoke bomb (to my surprise, no reference found on the internets).

But I agree with Wikipedia’s summary of Queen Beatrix’s reign: formal but professional. There’s a neat link to a recent acceptance speech of the Queen (in Dutch), for a rare doctorate: her humble speech is more or less a reflection of those 25 years of being head of the Dutch Royal House. I’m not particularly a Monarchist, but I have a tremendous respect for the Queen’s (and, naturally, her late husband’s) intelligent approach to politics. I remember there was a sigh of relief when she brokered the start of what was later known as the Purple Cabinet.

Which brings me to back to the part that drew my attention to this anniversary: the Queen’s 25th anniversary coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the Low Lands. We received an invitation for one of the many celebrations around the province. Since this may be one of the last commemorations, it might be a good idea to check the agenda for local celebrations. Naturally, I wish that the liberation of the former Dutch-East Indies (now Indonesia) will get the same level of attention. After this, we can finally let it rest. Lets hope others do too.

More of this, please

In this week’s ‘More of this, please’ I was going to highlight a couple of political matters, but I decided to cast the light on airplanes and carriers.

First, Ghost of a Flea’s plea for a missive for Marketplace concerning the rudder problems on an Air Transat’s Airbus plane. Last year, I flew with Air Transat too (same plane I think), when I headed back to Europe and The Netherlands. The flight was reasonable pleasant, but I remember (when taking the first step in the plane) mentioning that the Airbus reminded me of a cattle wagon. It was fully booked, for sure and I was surprised that we were still able to actually have a seat on this flight.

Over at the BBC, a reporter tells his tale about flying in the Post-USSR era. It’s getting (slowly) better though.

Imagine, you’re on a flight from, say Tokyo to Chicago. Imagine that one of the washroom was occupied for the longest time. What would you do? Warn the crew? I would.

Fresh echoes of 9/11? Remember the KLM flight that was banned from entering US airspace? Newsweek claims to have more details about that particular flight.

You are such a bore

Last night, I decided to try to listen to a couple of podcasts. Podcasts, as you probably already know, are fragments of (uh) spoken things. Some people call it the next installment of blogging. Some say it’s the future of the Internet. And others claim it will bring the mainstream media to a grinding halt.

Uh, actually, I believe those things are going to bring the Internet to a grinding halt: podcasts are (generally) plain mp3 files with an average size of 10-20 MB. There are (were?) attempts to utilize Bittorrent for downloading podcasts, but, looking at the sites of ‘Podcast Poineers‘, it looks like they have those mp3 files just available as a regular download. My first thought? Bandwidth. (I noted that one of the ‘Pioneers’ actually uses his homepage at Mac.com to store those podcasts).

Next: I was listening to a Scripting Podcast Pioneer (you know who you are) and had to force myself not to turn the sound off within the first minute. What followed was so pretentious, so amazingly un-un-(I have no word for this) , that I wonder if anyone ever told the Pioneer that he is such a bore. Maybe mr. Scripting Podcast Pioneer’s friends don’t dare to tell him. Since I’m not associated with anyone here I’ll say it: “Mr. Scripting Podcast Pioneer: you’re such a bore“.

I assumed that listening to the Veejay Podcast Pioneer might be actually interesting. I ended up listening to endless rants about endlessly amazing New York, and his endlessly funny (uh the f-word) great nightlife and that. “Mr. Veejay Podcast Pioneer, you are such an endless bore”.

I could go on and on, but I would be repeating myself endlessly and bore the readers to death. After listening a couple of podcasts, I ended up with the following conclusion: ‘If you’re not interesting, then you must be a podcaster’. I think that summarizes it perfectly.

Jelly

I was always under the impression that Jelly, or rather, gelatine, was made from seaweed. Nope: Made from bones and some acid. Uh. Yummy.

There are alternatives, which brings me back to the seaweed I just mentioned: particularly agar-agar, that substance my mother used to have in her kitchen cabinet. If I remember correctly they were small strips, sold in little pouches.

Not that I mind the original Jell-O. That gibberish 1substance just gives a different meaning to crushed bones, acidic liquids and Cousin Vinnie.

1. 04/17/05: Actually I thought I meant glibberish (which is a non-existing word). Blubberish, then?
