Halloween

Halloween? Last year at least some kids made it to the door, yesterday it was quiet. Over on the other part of the street it was actually buzzing with kids. For some kind of reason, I keep thinking that Halloween may become a dying tradition in this region. Mind the leftover candies.

Additionally, The Superstation had the ‘House On Haunted Hill‘ showing, which I managed to watch earlier this morning. It’s as bad as the title already says. It’s haunted with wanna-B-stars, stuffed with haunted effects and guided by a haunted storyline. And a haunting appearance of Lisa Loeb.

Goodnight Halloween 2003. Goodmorning Truro.

Logos and slogans

And, earlier there was ESR’s attempt to build community spirit by providing us mere mortals with a logo. I’m wary of people suggesting we all should rejoyce behind a logo or a slogan. Maybe that suspicion is part of the history and the suffering in the last years, century: or maybe it’s just because the right education makes you question these actions: Alfons sums it up perfectly:

Be sceptic. Don’t allow people to put a label on you, or even suggest you might need it. Look suspicious when someone claims “It’s my job to think of these things”.

I still respect ESR for the things he has done for programmers generally speaking. But for some kind of reason, I think he’s going in the same direction as the other guy. If you’re a programmer you use your brains. If you want to build a community, go start helping in your neighbourhood.

Celebrex

This morning I noticed something I noticed before when watching CNN’s much discussed AM show. This time there was an announcement that the drug Celebrex could help curing breastcancer. Right before the item was discussed, naturally (and predictable) there was a commercial of Celebrex shown during the break.

This isn’t coincidence, I keep telling myself. I do want to believe it is, but this was the second time that I could predict that there was going to be a commercial shown of a featured topic in the program. The state of American television is sad.

Microsoft into MP3 players

Originally via Slashdot, a link about Microsoft plans to enter the MP3 player market. Well, basically they’ll provide the software to keep those devices running alongside Windows based desktop PCs.

Apparantly a couple of manufacturors are readily willing to rally along with Microsoft’s plans. Now we only need Windows CE based cell phones. Do I smell a dead Stinger?

Always Fresh!

Good morning Canada. Do you want a pre-baked donut with that?

Big mouth la-da-di-da

Tthequeenisdead.jpghe world officially came to its end when I heard the first tunes of Big Mouth strikes again, the Smiths’ most remarkable song. Well, one of their remarkable songs. All their songs have something so cynical and surreal that nobody actually knows what the songs are about. In case of Big Mouth, I always thought the song had to do with loudmouthed people whose loudmouthed rants end on pile of burning wood.

“Now I Know how Joan of Arc felt, As the Flames rose to her Roman nose and her Walkman started to melt.”

Who knows what this song is about. Like every mere mortal, I’m entitled to have my own personal interpretation.

I’m not a virus!

Everytime a Windows ‘virus’ breaks out I have to laugh. And guess what: the latest variant of Melissa urges you to open that attachment once again but this time with more funny subject lines like ‘I am not a virus!‘.

‘Virus’ writers should start contests in writing the best ‘subject line to urge users to click that attachment’. Imagine a ‘virus’ writer with a ‘writer’s block’. Luckily there are plenty of resources to deal with a writer’s block:

“Cluster – Choose key words and ideas; then write associated ideas and words in clusters around them. This process often forms new ideas.”

Or in case of our beloved ‘virus’ writers: go get a life and try do something more original. If you want to be a real programmer, you should join an Open Source project.

Shark bites. Slurp. Googlebot.

Just when I was planning to start off a rant about searchengines and bots, an article (item?) from one of the Gillmor brothers caught my eye. He noticed the extraordinary number of directories that have been excluded for searchbots: most of the directories have something to do with Iraq.

“Perhaps the White House doesn’t want to make it easy for people to compare its older statements about Iraq with current realities — though that doesn’t explain why the pages are searchable on the White House site itself. Maybe, then, the White House wants to know who’s looking for these things (e.g. by tracking IP addresses of people who query the government site).”

Naturally, his comments aren’t really appreciated by all of the readers. Should technologists stay far away from making these remarks, I wonder?

Frozen donuts

After the introduction of steeped tea, Atlantic Canada can brace itself for another surprise: pre-baked donuts at Tim Horton’s.

Currently only stores in Atlantic Canada and BC bake their donuts fresh and as it looks now, the customers threaten to avoid those stores that sell pre-baked frozen donuts. Earlier this week the founder of Horton’s, Ron Joyce, renounced the company’s plan.

The last time I had donuts was actually today when I bought a dozen of them. I have no idea if they were frozen or not. But everytime we buy those donuts, I keep wondering if they make those things smaller every year.

So-so-sources

I was updating and committing changes to the RB CVS and discovered that SF still has not fixed the web-based interface. A shame. Now I can’t showcase my m4d l337 programming skills.

Not completely related: I noticed that Leonard Cohen was awarded the ‘ Officer in the Order of Canada’ award. Or something that sounds like that, and apparently the ceremony was both ‘woolly and wild’.

Open source

The first topic I read today was about Open Source. Over at Cleverhack two good links and discussions about Open Source and Microsoft. Lindows CEO’s take on Microsoft. Wall Street Journal’s.

Also, Slashdot links to a perfect article describing the workings of Open Source.

Google apparantly has silently introduced a new feature for their search engine: search through glossaries for words and definitions of those words. Apparently you start this kind of search by adding the ‘define’ keyword to the searchterms (like in ‘define Google‘).

This was a feature that was (and is) normally around here (Labs at Google). That page links to a newsgroup where this feature can be discussed, however, there is hardly any traffic there.

Couple slain II

The Halifax Herald continues the search for answers regarding the killing of a Netherlands resident and the Cape Breton woman. According the paper, the woman had intentions to move to The Netherlands, possibly taking her kids. Also surprising is that the Herald apparently talked to a Dutch reporter from De Telegraaf (The most unfavourite newspaper in The Netherlands): Once again, I wasn’t able to locate their item on their webpage. First of all it’s too colourful (Dutch alert and: ouch, my head. The colours. The colours). Secondly, they don’t provide a search option. Other papers (like De Volkskrant and Trouw) only provide this option after registration. Evil!

So back to on-line news sites, and apparently only Nu.NL has an item. Watch how carefully they try not to mention any names. By now, of course, the family of the Dutchman should have already been contacted by Canadian authorities, but it’s still not appropriate (for Dutch papers) to mention his name at this stage (well, the Telegraaf already mentioned it, but they hardly qualify as a newspaper <g>). Oh well.
