HAL’s 130th anniversary

Via RNW (the Dutch World Broadcasting Service), a note that the Holland America Line (Dutch: Holland America Lijn) is celebrating its 130th anniversary.

There’s more information on the unofficial HAL website. Naturally, the company has a website too.

The Holland America Line played a part in our family history too. My dad used to be a machinist on several ships, including the famous SS New Amsterdam. If I’m not wrong, his most valuable asset is that blue photoalbum with all the pictures he took when he was a sailor for HAL. I remember the old days of browsing through the photos, flipping the pages and asking him many questions about these strange and far destinations. As little kids we were so proud of it, that classmates got tired of us. Naturally, we didn’t care. I mean, the New Amsterdam was a relic of the glorious times of the Dutch trade. And all got lost when The Netherlands slowly lost the grip on their colonies. Slowly. Slowly. Slowly.

And the New Amsterdam? Eventually it was sold off to be demolished in little chunks of metal (1974). But the great yellow steampipes from that ship still colour dad’s photoalbum and our memories.

Happy birthday, HAL.
