Google groups

As a frequent user of UseNet (still), I must say that the latest beta of Google Groups totally sucks.

I think it’s the layout. Check for example the initial layout when going to a group (or in UseNet lingo ‘newsgroup’). Now switch to a message with multiple replies, for example here.

It’s completely inconsistent. In the last view, it’s hard to tell where a message actually ends. Yeah, probably somewhere around the name of the author. I’m trying to remember what it looked like initially, but I’m sure it was better than this crap.

Aceh and that

The most tragic thing about the Tsunami disaster is that the Aceh region seems to be the hardest hit area. Reports mention that 40,000 of the 120,000 residents may have been killed. In a region marked by conflict and the guerilla fight against the Indonesian military forces, the earthquake must have been a godsend for Jakarta and the Aceh freedom fighters.

In this light, the everlasting fight in Aceh, I find the Truth Laid Bear’s (and actually this whole right-wing-bloggers initiative) to buy Sumatra coffee a showcase of ignorance. Well meant naturally, however, there’s a huge difference between meaning well and doing well.

Happy New Stuff and all that

The first thing that grabbed my attention was this movie showing the path of the Dec 26 Tsunami wave over at CBC’s.

The movie comes from the Pacific Marine Environment Labaratory. The PMEL has quite some information about that tsunami.

Although the earlier mentioned movie is spectacular, please keep in mind it’s a rather simplified and static simulation: it reminded me a bit of throwing rocks in pools and watch the water ripples and waves.

On the brink of 2005

We watched the Two Towers last night. We had already seen it, but because we enjoyed watching the first installment of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (last Monday at CBC), we decided just to buy all three DVDs. Preferably fullscreen (not ‘wide screen’).

Which made it a quest on its own. I could mention about the dwarves (dwarfs is OK too) of Park street, the witches of Shortt’s Lake and other vermin. We made it safely thank you very much and will do that in 2005 too. Anyways, where’s my mind. Oh yes:

I managed to find the three films at the Truro Home Video store on the Esplanade, for 30 dollars a box. We’ll be watching the last movie tonight. There are witches in that movie, too, no?

Now, hey. Wait a minute.

Reading about the tidal wave/earthquake disaster in Asia, I noticed that most media outlets mention that Swedish tourists have been hit the hardest. The Swedish foreign minister, Laila Freivalds, says:

“You won’t find many people in Sweden who don’t have some personal link to this tragedy.”

Going from the Foreign minister’s page there to the Government’s gallery page I noticed something that took me by surprise, but then on afterthought…not completely: women make up half of the members of the Swedish cabinet. Take that.

OK then.

OK. For once, but then only once, a Dave Winer comment makes me laugh the wires off my table. There’s a lot of those wires too, here. I quote:

” Just went for a walk in Amarillo. A couple of observations. Everywhere you go there are God Bless America signs. Also, everywhere you go, the town smells of cow manure. Seriously. It really does. Here’s what I say. God Bless Amarillo.”

Amen to that. I feel a disturbance in the force.

Houston, it’s a mess outside

It’s a mess outside. The snow has been thrown all over the sidewalks on both sides of the road in front of our house. Sidewalk? There’s no sidewalk! Don’t expect me to make pictures of the scene either. It’s snow. It’s white. And it’s a lot.

A public service announcement: Just in case you didn’t notice, CBC was broadcasting ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ last night. They cut it in two parts: tonight they’ll show the leftovers.

Slightly depressed today and completely sick of people singing unto their Masters, Lords, Heavens and Lovers? Me too. How about some Astrocapella? Upbeat songs about nothing more than plain astronomy. And you thought astronomers were dull, boring and utterly off-worldish, right?

Houston, it’s still snowing

It’sblizzarddec04-2.png still snowing. I was out for a couple of minutes to walk the dog but decided to leave it with that. It makes no sense to stay outside and pretend to be a playball for the gusts.

In the meantime I managed to finally finish the Jedi Academy game, which leads me to today’s most memorable quote.

"Here I am trying to save the world and I have no savegames left."

Stay warm and stay inside.

Houston, we’ve got snow

No surprise: this morning, it blizzdec04_1.png
‘s all snow around. It’s windy too, naturally. There are even people driving on the road, literally weathering the snow, probably trying to get the max out of Boxing day (Yes, yes, we in Nova Scotia have our stores closed on Sunday).

I can’t tell if this is actually the ‘big one of the season’, as they were talking about today’s storm on last night’s ATV news (Oh, Joanne Clancy from ATV: please do something about your hair). It’s blowing snow for sure, but (as of now) I can still see portions of the driveway. Looks like all our snow is blowing up the street instead of ‘hanging out’ around our doorstep.

Mo’snow

It looks likesm_snowbirds.png we’ll have our share of snowstorm tomorrow. The Weather Office calls for a Blizzard alert and an amount between 10 – 15cm. Commercial broadcaster ATV mentions between 20 to 50 cm.

Ten centimeters is plenty for me. I have the shovel and salt ready for the big fight tomorrow.

From Keyl to the Provinces of Europe

Unintentionally, I ended up watching an interview with Catherine Keyl in a documentary called ‘De Schatkamer’ (The treasure room) [Warning: Dutch moving pictures and sound]. Generally speaking, she headed and presented a Dutch version of the famous American trash talk shows. There are a couple of funny fragments in the documentary: particularly her commentary on criticism from a colleague who called her any name (literally) you can find in the Dutch Dirty Word Dictionary ™. Not that I feel sorry for ms. Keyl.

Also a legitimate question for Europeans asked by a fellow Canadian: if Nova Scotia is a province of Canada, can we call The Netherlands a province of Europe too? Sure there might be some nationalistic feelings trying to put a hoof between the door, but at the end, can’t we just call all these countries provinces now?

And oh, Merry Christmas. You can start unwrapping the presents now.

It’s that time of the year again

I received a Christmas card from one of my mom’s sisters today. She promised to send me one the day we buried our mom. The card reminded me of the Christmas at home: Mom writing out cards for every each single familymember. Every year she must have sent out hundreds of them, hoping she didn’t forget anyone.

I feel guilt, now that I’ve received a card from overseas. And the urge to run around the block and buy a couple of cards for family members who should have had a Christmas card from me. I think I’ll send a card after the holidays. A personal note will do for now.
