{"id":711,"date":"2005-08-20T14:42:52","date_gmt":"2005-08-20T17:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=711"},"modified":"2005-08-20T14:53:18","modified_gmt":"2005-08-20T17:53:18","slug":"mesmerizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=711","title":{"rendered":"Mesmerizing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">I<\/span> was never aware of the fact I was using mesmerizing in the wrong context, until I saw an incoming link from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genx40.com\">Alan<\/a> saying that:\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Arthur makes up a great word for a being in a deep daydream: mesmerizing<sup>1<\/sup>\n<\/p>\n<p>I have always used <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/search?q=mesmerizing\">mesmerizing<\/a> in the context of <em>pondering<\/em> or <em>wondering<\/em>, well, the state of daydreaming as Alan says: little did I know that it actually has to do with <em>enthralling<\/em> the crowd, as in &#8216;captivating the audience&#8217;. The question remains, <em>where<\/em> did I actually get that word from, and to be honest: I think this word stuck with me before I even decided to settle down in North America. The next coming days, I&#8217;ll be thinking hard to find out why I decided to use that particular word to describe the state of &#8216;mindlessly thinking about good things past&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand: you could also see it as a contribution to enrich the English language, as so many others before me have done.
