{"id":501,"date":"2004-02-19T20:05:49","date_gmt":"2004-02-19T23:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=501"},"modified":"2004-02-19T20:05:49","modified_gmt":"2004-02-19T23:05:49","slug":"crap-once-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=501","title":{"rendered":"Crap (once again)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=dropcap>F<\/span>or the company I&#8217;m working for I have been <a href=\"http:\/\/hoogervorst.dyndns.org\/~arthur\/weblog\/archives\/000923.html\">thinking of writing software that grabs currency rates<\/a> from the Bank of Canada.\n<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m truly impressed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bankofcanada.ca\/en\/exchange.htm\">the openness of the national bank<\/a>, however, I do not agree with their concept and current (static) implemetation. It&#8217;s cleverly <em>obnoxious<\/em> and add to that, maybe handy for the casual user, but not for companies that need &#8216;real-time&#8217; information or <em>specific<\/em> data for a specified range. This is where XML-RPC\/SOAP comes in handy, but other protocols would do fine too. Give us the API and I assure we&#8217;ll be willing to pay a subscription fee.\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Additionally this brings me to the other topic: why would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intertwingly.net\/blog\/1716.html\">we need RSS or Atom, aggregrators or even bloglines<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Note how many proponents of aggregrators say that it makes them &#8216;browse faster, skim headlines&#8217; and &#8216;allows them to find information faster&#8217;. As if &#8216;reading headlines&#8217; makes one informed. Reading the backflip of a book doesn&#8217;t mean you have actually read the book. Skimming booktitles at the library doesn&#8217;t make one more world-wise either. We see too many A-list bloggers get away with &#8216;just-a-link-here&#8217; and &#8216;a comment overthere&#8217;. <a href=\"http:\/\/techcentralstation.com\/021804C.html\">Don&#8217;t follow that crap<\/a>: Form your own opinion.<\/p>\n<p> Read.
