Excellent material.\n<\/p>\n<p>Via, uh, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metafilter.com\/80759\/Discovering-bacterias-amazing-communication-system\">MetaFilter<\/a>, I listened to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/index.php\/talks\/bonnie_bassler_on_how_bacteria_communicate.html\">Bonnie Bassler&#8217;s TED presentation<\/a> (18 minutes) about how bacteria communicate. The thing that struck me the most was how she explained how we ended up with resistant bacteria:\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote\">&#8220;We&#8217;re running out of anti-biotics. Bacteria are getting increasingly multi-drug resistant, and that&#8217;s basically because all the anti-biotics we use kill bacteria&#8230; [&#8230;] and <em>that selects the resistant mutants<\/em>.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>They have a name for that: it&#8217;s called evolution.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"reference\">\n<p><strong>Update 1:<\/strong> Bassler&#8217;s name corrected (was &#8216;Bartlett&#8217;, who was actually an actress in St. Elsewhere).
