{"id":205,"date":"2002-11-17T00:41:38","date_gmt":"2002-11-17T03:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=205"},"modified":"2002-11-17T00:41:38","modified_gmt":"2002-11-17T03:41:38","slug":"wing-commander-1999","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=205","title":{"rendered":"Wing Commander (1999)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span> long<br \/>\ntime ago, Origin Software had a talented programmer called Chris<br \/>\nRoberts who&nbsp;designed the first Space Combat similator for the<br \/>\nPC.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/home.iprimus.com.au\/nsswty\/Wedge009\/WC1\/\">The&nbsp;game&nbsp;was revolutionary for that time<\/a>,<br \/>\nand pushed the limits for hardware requirements. Traditionally, Origin<br \/>\npumped out a couple of other sequels, but none of them came close to<br \/>\nthat original feeling of that first Space Combat shooter. And that<br \/>\ntalented programmer? He went on starting his own company Digital Anvil,<br \/>\nwhich at the end was sold to Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/Title?0131646\">Wing Commander<\/a> (the<br \/>\nmovie) is directed by that same programmer. And boys does it hurt.<br \/>\nIncredibly. The effects are neat but not extremely<br \/>\nimpressive&nbsp;(they come from Digital Anvil), but the story is one<br \/>\nbig cliche. There are so many obnoxious scenes&nbsp;that I wasn&#8217;t sure<br \/>\nif I had to laugh or cry. <em>Pings<\/em> in space? Ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>However I do recommend watching the movie:&nbsp;there is a huge<br \/>\ndifference between producing a video game and a movie. Wing Commander<br \/>\n(the movie) sets a neat example of things gone wrong.
