(<a href=\"http:\/\/science.slashdot.org\/science\/07\/11\/07\/1644216.shtml\">via Slashdot<\/a>) According to a 1967 treaty (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outer_Space_Treaty\">Outer Space Treaty<\/a>),  states have legal jurisdiction within spacecraft registered (&#8216;owned&#8217;) by them, which more or less compares with current maritime treaties. Imagine <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keelhauling\">keelhauling<\/a><\/em> with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadarm\">CanadArm<\/a>! Pirates of The Void. Yeeargh.\n<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, researchers discovered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2007\/11\/071106133058.htm\">fifth planet around star 55 Cancri<\/a>. The star itself is 41 light-years away in the direction of the constellation Cancer. This brought me to a couple of sites that track down &#8216;extra solar planets&#8217;. The first one is the <a href=\"http:\/\/exoplanet.eu\/\">Extrasolar Planet Encyclopedia<\/a>, which truly reads like a 1995 website (Good memories). The second one is JPL&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov\/\">&#8216;PlanetQuest&#8217;<\/a>, which sounds like the title of a typical 80s adventure movie. That aside, both websites have excellent explanations how astronomers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rssd.esa.int\/SA-general\/Projects\/Staff\/perryman\/planet-figure.pdf\">can detect planets around stars<\/a> (PDF file!).\n<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;ve ever mentioned this before, but there&#8217;s going to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slashfilm.com\/2007\/11\/06\/jennifer-connelly-and-kathy-bates-join-the-day-the-earth-stood-still\/\">a remake of the 50s classic &#8216;The Day The Earth Stood Still&#8217;<\/a>, which will star Keanu (&#8220;Klaatu&#8221;) Reeves and Jennifer Connelly (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Day_The_Earth_Stood_Still\">@wikipedia<\/a>).
