{"id":1581,"date":"2007-08-15T19:51:45","date_gmt":"2007-08-15T22:51:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=1581"},"modified":"2007-10-14T22:21:35","modified_gmt":"2007-10-15T01:21:35","slug":"v-j-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=1581","title":{"rendered":"V-J Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">T<\/span>oday <a href='http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?attachment_id=1582' rel='attachment wp-att-1582' title='The Dutch-Indies monument'><img class=\"alignright\" src='http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/08\/mon_umen_t_fallen_in_don_esia.thumbnail.jpg' alt='The Dutch-Indie monument' \/><\/a>marks <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victory_over_Japan_Day\">V-J day<\/a>, which is the day that (then) emperor Hirohito announced the unconditional surrender of the Japanese forces, eventually &#8216;freeing&#8217; my parents, their siblings and their parents (the independence of Indonesia was called for two days after that, thus pushing back time for the ones who just had managed to survive the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japanseburgerkampen.nl\/Java-kampen.htm\">Japanese camps<\/a>).\n<\/p>\n<p>Every year it&#8217;s sort of becoming a sport to find news items about this particular day: it&#8217;s getting less with the year and sometimes, I think that is probably a good thing.
