Even an old (Russian) tank made an appearance (briefly?) as you can tell from that photo at BBC&#8217;s. Excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/the-internationalist.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/mob-at-deak-ter_23.html\">commentary<\/a> (pictures\/video\/sound) at The Internationalist (for future reference, <a href=\"http:\/\/the-internationalist.blogspot.com\/2006_10_01_the-internationalist_archive.html\">here be a permalink to the October archive<\/a>)<sup>1<\/sup>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Which reminds me that I should mention that both the Czech (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uprising_in_Plze%C5%88_%281953%29\">1953<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hungarian_Revolution_of_1956\">Hungarian revolts<\/a> (1956) made it into the Dutch history lessons for 12 year-old kids<sup>2<\/sup>. If I remember correctly, this was exclusively done because many Eastern Europeans who fled the violence ended up in West Europe, and indeed, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/cgi-bin\/texis\/vtx\/photos?set=hungary_1956\">a portion of them ended up in The Netherlands<\/a> (link to UNHCR).\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"extra\"><small><strong>Update 10\/24<\/strong>: Nu.nl carries a Dutch story about how the Hungarian revolution turned the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nu.nl\/news\/859044\/1201\/Hollandse_communistenjacht.html\">tide for Dutch Communists<\/a> (who were previously respected for the crucial role they played during the German occupation)<\/small>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"extra\"><small><sup>1<\/sup> I just became aware that Blogger doesn&#8217;t support &#8216;daily archives&#8217;: hence the link to the complete October archive at The Internationalist.<br \/>\n<sup>2<\/sup> I&#8217;m not sure if this still applies today: after all, back in the days, the Cold War played a bigger part in our lives.<br \/>\n<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier, I saw that the commemoration of the Hungarian Revolution of 56 (Excellent Wikipedia entry) turned into violent clashes with the riot police (BBC news).
