{"id":1225,"date":"2006-08-26T08:43:35","date_gmt":"2006-08-26T11:43:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=1225"},"modified":"2006-09-07T21:00:33","modified_gmt":"2006-09-08T00:00:33","slug":"what-about-pluto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?p=1225","title":{"rendered":"What about, <strike>Pluto<\/strike>dwarfs?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcap\">A<\/span>nd <a id=\"p1224\" rel=\"attachment\" class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/?attachment_id=1224\" title=\"The Planets of The United Planets Of Planets\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hoogervorst.ca\/arthur\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/the-planets-of-the-united-planets-of-planets.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"The Planets of The United Planets Of Planets\" \/><\/a>then this week, the IAU (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iau.org\/\">International Astronomical Union<\/a>) decided to classify Pluto as a &#8216;dwarf planet&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n<p>A summary of the (adopted by vote) resolutions can be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iau2006.org\/mirror\/www.iau.org\/iau0603\/index.html\">found at the IAU site<\/a>, where the honourable astronomers decided first to determine which types of planets there (resolution 5A):\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote\">\nRESOLUTION 5A<br \/>\nThe IAU therefore resolves that &#8220;planets&#8221; and other bodies in our Solar System be defined into three distinct categories in the following way:<br \/>\n(1) A &#8220;planet&#8221;1 is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.<br \/>\n(2) A &#8220;dwarf planet&#8221; is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape2 , (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.<br \/>\n(3) All other objects3 except satellites orbiting the Sun shall be referred to collectively as &#8220;Small Solar-System Bodies&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Resolution 6A concludes simple with &#8216;Pluto is a &#8220;dwarf planet&#8221; by the above definition and is recognized as the prototype of a new category of trans-Neptunian objects&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n<p>So long Pluto. We hardly knew ye.
